POSITION:  Deaf Literacy Program / Administrative Assistant -  summer student position.

Must be between ages of 18 and 30 years of age.  Eights (8) weeks for 32 hours per week@$14 per hour


Position Summary:   The Deaf Literacy Program Assistant will provide support to the instructors that teach English, numeracy, ASL and computer literacy at our Deaf Adult Upgrading Program (DAUP) in Oshawa.



  • Work as part of a team with existing staff members to provide a literacy program for Deaf and hard of hearing learners based on the bilingual-bicultural model.

  • Assist with the development of resource materials for English/ASL literacy, numeracy and computer literacy.

  • Assist with educating the community about the services to generate appropriate referrals.

  • Update the literacy website

  • Promote the literacy program to outside agencies and organizations in Durham Region as well as to Deaf and hard of hearing individuals.

  • Assist with volunteer recruitment.

  • Update the volunteer manual

  • Revise as needed the volunteer recruiting and orientation plan

  • Provide back up and admin support for reception

  • Answer the telephone, respond to basic inquiries, take messages

  • Welcome guests, learners and volunteers, when necessary

  • Keep an inventory of all publications/books/resources

  • Prepare office communications and mailings, as required

  • Maintain office filing system

  • Assist with computers and software updates, perform general clerical duties to include but not limited to: photocopying, faxing, mailing and filing.

  • Provide service to walk-in clients as needed.




  • Knowledge of American Sign Language (ASL) and Canadian Deaf Culture

  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) and Internet applications

  • Excellent communication service skills

  • Non-judgmental, respectful and positive attitude

  • Knowledge of non-profit sector an asset

  • Good organisational, interpersonal, time management and communication skills

  • Demonstrated maturity and ability to work independently

  • Current criminal background check required

  • 18 years of age or older


LINE OF RESPONSIBILITY:                                 

Report to the Deaf Adult Upgrading Program Co-ordinator and Executive Director

This position would be suitable for a person that is looking for experience in working with Deaf, hard of hearing and hearing adults in literacy/upgrading program.  This candidate should have a good knowledge of American Sign Language, Deaf culture, good organizational skills, and possess maturity, patience and flexibility.
